Medieval period church bell. qtvr
Medieval period church bell. qtvr
Medieval period bronze hand bell, quadrangular in shape, of a type associated with the early Irish church.. The bell was regarded as one of the insignia of clerics and abbots of the medieval church in Ireland. This example was part of the collections of the Royal Irish Academy catalogued in the 1850’s by Sir William Wilde, father of Oscar Wilde. Its find place is unknown which is often the case with 19th century acquisitions, a time when les attention was paid to the scientific detail of find circumstance. Many of the bells that have survived in museum collections are associated with individual saints, for example Saint Patrick or Saint Ruadain. Some were enshrined in ornate bell shrines such as that of St Senan of Scattery Island, Co Clare featured elsewhere on this site.

Motif piece found in 12th century context during archaeological excavations at High Street, Dublin. These objects are believed to have been used by metalworkers and their apprentices in order to experiment with designs prior to their transfer to precious metal. it is also possible that some piees may have been used to produce moulds for bronze casting. This piece, found in 12th century context, shows both native Irish and Scandinavian influence. An interlace panel on one face is closely matched by a similar motif on one face of St Senan's belshrine, also featured on this web site

The Brasky meteorite. qtvr
The Brasky meteorite is the largest ever known to have fallen in Ireland. It landed in Briska td, Patrickswell, Co Limerick in September 1813. It weighs some 27 kilos and pieces landed nearby were still hot when they were found. Meteorites are essentially bits left over from the formation of the solar system which form bits of rocks known as asteroids which solidified about 3,500,000,000 years ago. Some, like this, orbited too close to the earth and were pulled in by gravity.
