Portlaoise Railway Station, designed by Sancton Wood, was opened in 1847. Characteristically Gothic in style, it cost upwards of £5,000 to build.

Quaker School
The Quaker School opened on the 30th January 1786. The purpose of the school was to provide education for the children of poor Quakers. Initially only girls attended this school. This appears to have been behind the present day Community School, in what now is known locally as Smith's Field.

Interior of Donaghmore Workhouse, Rathdowney
Living conditions inside the Workhouse were very grim, with families being seperated into different dormitories. Inmates worked during the day, then ate their evening meals in silence.

Quaker Cemetery
The Quaker Burial Ground in Rosenallis is locally known as the "Friends Sleeping Place." It is one of the most attractive graveyards in the country. A rich sprinkling of deciduous trees covers this picturesque countryside.

In 1315 Bruce came to Lea, on which occasion the church and castle were burned. Around this time the castle then came into the possession of the O'Dempseys.

Silverware Presented to the French Church by the Royal Family
In 1715 the Royal Family in England were persuaded to acknowledge conformity with a presentation of silver communion vessels and a bell. The silverware bore the words: "Given by her Royal Highness Wilhelmena Carolina, Princess of Wales, in honour of the conformist Church at Portarlington, 1st March 1714/5."

The first Minister of the French Church, Pasteur Jacques Gillet, was chosen by Henri Massue, Marquis de Ruvigny and then Earl of Galway, to care for the spiritual needs of the Huguenots settled in Portarlington.

Roundwood House Staircase, Mountrath
The stairs of Roundwood House rise from the centre-rear of the hall to a landing between the ground and first floors, from which twin stairs to right and left rise to twin landings, linked at the staircase end to form a gallery with converse curving ends to its two side wings projecting over the hall.

St. Fintan's Tree, Mountrath
There is the famous St. Fintan's Tree at Clonenagh, where a well sprung up in its trunk when a farmer who lived across the road refused to allow people to visit a holy well in his field.

SS. Peter & Paul's Old Parish Church, Portlaoise
This church was a fine piece of architecture which was situated in the centre of the town. It consisted of a gallery which extended completely around the church. SS. Peter & Paul's Old Parish Church was also adorned with beautiful stained glass windows.

St. Peter's Church Tower
John Wesley, founder of the Methodists, is said to have preached in only one Protestant church - St. Peter's. The remains of this church is in Railway Street, Portlaoise.

Roundwood House, Mountrath
Roundwood House was built for Anthony Sharpe, who inherited the lands and an older house in 1735 on the death of his father, Isaac. The present house was built about 1741 at which date the name Roundwood first appears in the registered deeds in lieu of the former name, Killanure.

St. Mochua's Desk
St. Mochua founded a monastery - Teách Mochua - in the seventh century. A warrior at first, Mochua converted to Christianity at the age of 30 and later became a monk. The work was designed and made by sculptor Michael Burke in association with the staff and students of Scoil Mhuire Fatima and it is situated in the grounds of Timahoe's Round Tower.

The exquisite drawing room in Stradbally Hall, Stradbally. The ceiling and frieze of the drawing room are excellent examples of the Adams' Style.

In connection with Perry's Brewery were extensive maltings at Donaghmore, Brosna and Roscrea, where only Irish barley was used.

Timahoe Round Tower, Co. Laois
Timahoe Round Tower is the only remnant of the early monastery founded by St. Mochua. It is a very well-preserved Round Tower, measuring 96 feet in height. It is one of the widest Round Towers in the country.

The beautiful dining room in Stradbally Hall formed part of the old Georgian house, and has not been changed in the subsequent alterations.

The Gold Room in Ballyfin House, Mountrath
The Drawing Room in Ballyfin House was renamed the Gold Room as it was furnished with rich rococo gilt mirrors. This room was decorated in 1848 by Gillows and Conifod, Oxford St., London.
