Transport
Road
The N4 from Dublin to Sligo passes through Longford. The N5 National Route to the North West (Castlebar /Westport/ Ballina, Knock airport) branches off the N4 at Longford town.
Rail
Longford railway station opened on 8 November 1855. The main rail network, ‘Iarnrod Eireann’, runs a regular two-hourly train service between Dublin and Sligo.
Bus
‘Bus Eireann’, run regular services to: Dublin, Sligo, Galway, and also to Westport, Ballina, Derry, Belfast and Dublin Airport.
Wharton’s Travel operates a service to Cavan with connections to Derry and Belfast.
Air
There is a local airport is Abbeyshrule. It is Longford’s main air transport centre. It receives a small general aviation aircraft and runs two flight training centres. The airport is also the home of the aerobatic aircraft EI-SAM of Irish international competition aerobatics pilot, David Bruton. A popular airshow is held there annually.
