Burren Changes

Cattle Grazing in the Burren

Most of the Burren is rural. In the central Burren, there are scattered farm holdings, with small farming communities such as Carran, Boston and Tubber.

Most towns and villages are along the coastal regions and the southern edges. The total population of the Burren uplands is now just over 2,500.

In recent times, an increase in holiday and commuter homes has slowed the decrease in population, which was due to agricultural decline. The summers are busy with lots of visitors to the area. In winter, the Burren is quiet, with many empty houses and little employment.
