Serious Students

Take a look at the photo below. The boys in the photo are pupils from the old Greenmount National School who won scholarships in 1931.

The scholarships were provided by Cork Corporation and meant that these boys could attend secondary school. In those days, secondary schooling was not provided for free.

The boys in the photograph are dressed in their best clothes. Can you describe what they are wearing? What clothes would you wear for an important occasion?

In 1931, cameras were not as common as they are now. People had their pictures taken only on very special occasions. In many old photos, people can look very serious.
