  • Aspects of Leitrim

Town houses, or the "big house" where the local landlord lived, were much larger than the houses of the ordinary people.

Such houses could have twenty rooms, including a drawing room, a dining room and a library. They would have been beautifully furnished with papered walls, which you would not have seen in a cottage.

Many business people lived above their premises. A bank might have its business on the ground floor while the bank manager and his family lived upstairs. A garda barracks usually had accommodation for the family of the sergeant.
