An Unusual Layout

If you walk around the centre of Monaghan town, you might notice that many of the main streets are quite short. This is because the town centre is based around four closely connected Squares: the Diamond, Church Square, Market Square and Old Cross Square. Click the map to expand it and see the pattern of the town for yourself.

This unusual layout makes Monaghan a unique town in the North of Ireland. Most other towns in the area were built by planters coming from Britain in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. They all follow a similar pattern, based around one main town square.
