The Boathouse

The boathouse on the Castlecomer Demesne's lower lake was created in keeping with the Romantic Movement, which had lead to the creation of the lakes themselves. The boathouse was created around the same period as the lakes; the building further added to the scenic beauty of the area and complimented the lakes. Architecturally, it was created to blend in with its natural surroundings as it was set nestled in amongst the trees on the lake side. It also served to store the Wandesforde family boats, which where used for fishing and relaxing on the lakes.

Over the years as the boats were used less frequently on the lake, the boathouse fell in to disrepair and the original boathouse no longer remains today. With the refurbishment of the lakes beginning in 2004, the foundation for a new boathouse has been laid on the site of the original. There are hopes of having a similar boathouse once again in the future.
