Fr. Murphy Monument

Fr John Murphy who took a prominent part in the insurrection of 1798 was captured, tortured and executed in Tullow on July 2nd, 1798. In July 1902, a fund raising committee was established to erect a monument to Fr. Murphy. The committee was chaired by Mr. Thomas Bolger.  A specification was prepared in December 1904. It included detail for a pedestal of selected limestone and for the statue to be of best quality, white Sicilian marble.

Three contractors submitted designs which were considered:- Messrs Pearse of Dublin, Messrs. Harris of Dublin and Mr. Walsh of Carlow. The design of Mr. Walsh was chosen. The cost of the memorial amounted to £360 and eight shillings and was financed by voluntary subscriptions. The statue was unveiled on August 5th, 1905.

Important speeches were made by Mr. Thomas Bolger, chairman of the committee and by Michael Davit, M.P. rev. Fr. Kavanagh O.S.F. performed the unveiling ceremony in front of an enormous crowd. Mr. Bolger brought the proceedings to a close.
