Physical Landscape of Longford

Longford is a landlocked county situated in north-west Leinster. Westmeath borders Longford to the south and east, Roscommon lies to the west and Cavan and Leitrim to the north. The Shannon and Lough Ree form a natural boundary between Roscommon and Longford.

Longford is quite flat. The highest point in the county is Carn Clonhugh which stands at 278m. It is situated north of Longford town and is also known as Cairn Hill.

The Shannon bounds the county in the west before it flows into Lough Ree. A number of small rivers flow through the county including the Camlin and the Inny.

Lough Ree forms a boundary with Roscommon in the southwest. A number of small islands lie in the postion of the lake which is considered part of Longford. Along the northern boundary there are a number of small lakes, the most important of which is Lough Gowna. Lough Gowna is considered a beautiful lake because of the many inlets and little peninsulas which are features of its shoreline.

Lewis's Map

Take another look at Lewis's map of Longford. Can you find any of the features of Longford's landscape which are mentioned above?

Remember, over time, the spelling of some placenames may have changed slightly.
