  • Aspects of Longford

The population of Co. Longford in 1841 was 115,491. By 1901, after the Famine and years of immigration had taken their toll, the population had dropped by almost 60%.

The 2006 census gives the population of Co. Longford as 34,391. This was an increase of just over 10% on the 2002 figures.

About one-third of the total population of the county lives in Longford Town.

Agriculture

About 65% of the total land area of Co. Longford is farmland. Farms in the county are generally small.

Eventhough the amount of forestry in the county is lower than the national average, Longford has the highest proportion of jobs related to forestry in the country. This is because the largest sawmill in Ireland is located in Longford.
