The main aspects of the history curriculum which are particularly focussed on are as follows.

Strand 1: Early people and ancient societies

A selection from:

  • Stone Age peoples
  • Bronze Age peoples
  • Celts
  • Early Christian Ireland

Objectives as listed in the history curriculum for the above areas and for the farming and food theme are:

The child will be enabled to

  • Become familiar with aspects of the lives of these peoples

Food and cooking

  • Examine and become familiar with evidence we have which tells us about these people
  • Record and place these peoples on appropriate timelines

Strand 2: Life, society, work and culture in the past

A selection from:

  • Life in Norman Ireland
  • Life in the 19th century
  • Life in Ireland since the 1950s

The child will be enabled to:

  • Become familiar with aspects of the lives of these people
    - Farming, foods and cooking
    - Technologies which people developed and used

Strand 3: Continuity and change over time

Possible units:
- Food and Farming
- Shops and Fairs

The child should be enabled to:

  • Identify items of change and continuity in the "line of development"
  • Identify some of the factors which have caused and prevented change

Stand 4: My Locality Through the Ages

The child should be enable to:

  • Study a period or periods in the history of the local village, town, city area, townland, parish or county
  • Investigate changing farming practices
  • Collect related local ballads, stories and traditions
