  was known far beyond her native place. The details of her illness have become obscure over the last hundred years with the various retellings of the story. The period of her sleep varies from twenty two years to a few short months.

 

It is said that doctors came from near and far to examine her but failed to wake her. Her story even reached the pages of the British Medical Journal. In May 1893, an article was published in the Roscommon Herald which would seem to confirm that the sleeping beauty of Gowna did actually exist.
