Through completing the unit Transport the child should become aware of forms of transport and transport routes generally. They should also be familiar with ways of studying transport in their own locality.


SESE: Geography

Strand units:    People living and working in the local area  

                        People living and working in a contrasting part of Ireland


Transport and communications

  • become aware of forms of transport and transport routes in the locality and in a contrasting part of Ireland

  • become familiar with the communication methods available

  • investigate work of people involved in transport and communications

 

Natural Environmental Features and people

  • become aware of the natural features in the locality and in a contrasting part of Ireland and their relationship to the lives of people living in these places


Geographical skills and concepts:

A sense of place: children will develop an awareness of how places are connected by   transport   routes and by different methods of transport. They will learn how people can move from place to place what things can be transported from one place to another example a gas pipeline

A sense of space: Children will develop an understanding of the location of different places and use maps to examine routes and direction to and from places.  


Maps, globes and graphical skills:

Children will develop familiarity with pictures, aerial photographs, maps and graphs in relation to transport. Children will develop a sense of aerial perspective in relation to roads and will begin to develop an understanding of map symbols for roads and railways. Children will locate roads on maps.

Concept Development

Modes of transport: Sea, land and air. What influences the form of transport used for transporting goods or people?

Traffic congestion

Activities: Traffic surveys. Children will learn to measure the type of traffic and/or volume of traffic and the determine which are the busiest roads or times of day in their immediate area


Integration with other subjects can be achieved in a number of areas.

History: local studies-roads, railways, canals and bridges in my locality

Mathematics: traffic surveys

Language: discussion, presentation of ideas orally and in written form

Visual Arts: drawing local bridges and rivers
