Demise of the Pawn Shop
The pawnbroker was an essential part of the economy of Waterford for many years. However gradual changes in social conditions brought about the slow decline of the pawnshop. In the 1930's and 1940's only six shops still remained in Waterford.
Today all the pawnshops have closed down.
The passing of the pawnshop is not regretted as it means the economic and social conditions of the citizens have greatly improved but it must be remembered that the pawnbrokers provided a vital service and prevented many people from falling into the hands of unscrupulous money lenders.
