The Clements Family & Lough Rynn House

The Clements Family (Lord Leitrim) were the biggest and most famous landlord family in Leitrim. The family also had estates in Donegal, Cavan and Kildare. At the height of their glory they owned 96,000 acres.

The most famous of the family was William Sydney Clements, the Third Earl, who was one of the most hated men in Ireland in his day. Not surprisingly, he was assassinated near Milford, Co Donegal on 2
April 1878.

The family continued to live at their Leitrim house, Lough Rynn, near Mohill, until Marcus Clements sold the last remaining property in the 1980s. Some of the family still live at Killadoon, Co Kildare.
