The exteriors of 53 and 54 Upper Mount Street are quite plain and were designed in line with the classical rules of proportion, typical for Georgian townhouses. They have brick fronts with large sash windows in the middle. The top two windows of the houses were designed to be progressively smaller than those on the first two floors to give the illusion of great height and grandeur from street level.   Like the higher level windows, the basement windows are also small.

The Doric style doorways of 53 and 54 are accessed by steps from the street below. The wrought iron railings that run alongside the steps and along the front of the house at street level are typical of the Georgian period. The doorway of 54 is less elaborate than some of the earlier examples of eighteenth century door styles. The classic columns are set back behind the wall face on either side of the door, with a plain semi-circular fan-light above the door.

The doorway of 53 includes iron spokes in the fan-light. These fan-lights were a significant source of natural light in the days before electricity and are an important feature of Georgian houses.
